inkscape.org update needs [django and video]

hello all! just wanted to update you all on the website we're making some good progress and things are starting to come together for the website, We're currently in the process of having the pages mocked up and then translating those to html/css and django. we do however need a couple things..
1. We need someone to develop a good quality video for our about page it'll be a brief overview of inkscape and will hopefully be less than 2-3 minutes. - It would be great to include a couple brief interviews of prominent companies that us inkscape for their everyday work. If you're able to submit interviews in video format to add to the video it would be great too! It will essentially be a promo video - Here's an example of where the video would go ( http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41698/mockup-about_1.1.png) 2. if you're skilled in Django and willing to take on various features of the site such as i18n (localization).
so if you're willing to help either email me here or join us at irc.freenode.net and join #inkscape-web Thanks and happy holidays! Ian "Inc" Caldwell

Sounds good! Any chance we can see your progress? (So we can sort of grow with you, instead of being presented with a nearly finished work in the end.) If you don't want too much general comments on things you're going to change anyway, feel free to tell us what you would like comments on.

Just checking, but I assume this would be in addition to written material? I've actually found a project once that only had video's as documentation... I can't even remember which project it was, that's how short I stayed on their site. (Don't get me wrong, I do thing a promotional movie could be a good idea.)

I was thinking more like 1 minute - you know like a captivating overview that supported the text in a visual way and made people want to use the software - which briefly showed what inkscape is, what it looks like and how it's used. A short voice-over + sub-title summing up what Inkscape is, cc background music, 3-5 second shots of inkscape on different OSs, close-ups of a few important features in use, a time-lapse of someone making art...
I was thinking more detailed videos (like interviews etc.) could go in other more appropriate sections of the site - with a transcription/text article equivalent on each page.
Maybe dumb but...don't want to freak people out when they just want to know what it is (it's an overview page after all - what I imagined people would get if they click the Learn More button as on the home page design).
Feel free to shoot me down...

Yes, yes, YES! Very well summed up; that's precisely what we need. More videos can be spread throughout in overviews of various sections. I'm even thinking it could be nice if the "features" boxes were just screenshots, but when you click on them they animate, silent little movies demonstrating the feature, maybe even make the sub-features there expand when clicked on to show a screenshot-video in similar style (naturally with instructions and visual cues). I think video can be used to great effect in promoting Inkscape.
--- *Task for artists:* 404 page improvement: see http://djink.chrismorgan.info/errors/404 for the basic thing I did (I think I have a warped mind - not sure quite why replacing the logo with "linked image not found" occurred to me). I want to get some graphic/s in there in some form, and here's the idea I've had: * Take the cup of tools from the 0.47 splash screen - http://sko.deviantart.com/art/Inkscape-0-47-contest-entry-122430398 if you don't know/remember it * Tip it on its side with the tools spilling out. This would fit nicely on the right leaving space for text on the left. If done well I think it would produce a very nice effect. Any artists want to take a crack at producing something like that? ---
All up, this project is progressing well and I'm very optimistic about its success. We've already got a lot more done than we did last time (and it's looking *heaps* better!). Especial thanks to duckgoesoink - the design looks very impressive and is also practical to use.
I probably won't be getting much more done on this until mid January on account of various Christmas-related things and a church youth camp at the start of January, but I'll be right back to it as soon as I can be - I'm enjoying this :-)
Regards,
Chris Morgan.

In 'Language' dropdown box there 'Россия' for Russian language. It must be 'Русский' instead. Россия is a country name. Don't know - maybe that's Django bug..No matter.

Got to be careful with this though, do we really want videos littering the whole website? For example, perhaps the mini-screenshots on the features page could work as clickable screencasts, but I don't think there would be a need to have one for each feature listed on the page (potentially cumbersome). Also, do you mean something like on this page for the mini-movies? http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/features/
Although I believe video is a useful communication tool, it's all too easy to recklessly abuse the medium. A few well-placed, well-made videos can enhance content, but lots of half-pie videos all over the place might actually diminish it. Quality is better than quantity...

Martin,
Hello,

Thanks Chris and Ian did a ton of work on that.

Please do, all comments are welcome.
This part:
"which runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux"
Quite besides putting your fellow FOSS project last in a list of supported operating systems, especially since many distros package and release Inkscape ready to install and windows and macosx don't.
I see your point I will change that to mention GNU/Linux Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu. First see what people say. I am working on some images and openid login. To use to make it work across the site.
But worse is the confusion of "Linux". Does this sentence mean that Inkscape will work on Android? Will it work on my TiVo or my Home brew Wii? It is nonsense to claim to run on Linux when linux is a kernel which can't run Inkscape in most cases.
Hmm Android that would be nice! Maybe iPod, iPad how nice would that be? XCode and sdk sparks will be fling.
TiVo, HomeBrew, not sure we would really go in that direction.
It would be more clear and honest to say "which runs on Gnome/Linux" or "FreeDesktop Linux" or just "Fedora, Debian and other awesome Free Desktops".
Yes very good suggestions will work on that.

I wanted to make a comment about the text shown in the mockup there. This part:
"which runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux"
Quite besides putting your fellow FOSS project last in a list of supported operating systems, especially since many distros package and release Inkscape ready to install and windows and macosx don't.
It's quite simply a question of popularity. The list of operating systems goes by general OS popularity - and quite reasonably too. Linux users will expect it to go in that order, whereas if you put Linux first, I think many Windows and OS X users would be put off it as "a Linux thing" that just happens to have been loosely ported to Windows/OS X.
But worse is the confusion of "Linux". Does this sentence mean that
Inkscape will work on Android? Will it work on my TiVo or my Home brew Wii? It is nonsense to claim to run on Linux when linux is a kernel which can't run Inkscape in most cases.
I disagree very strongly with your case here. "Linux" is a generally recognised family of operating systems. In the lingua franca, "Linux" means these operating systems, not the kernel as a technical definition of Linux may be. And there isn't really any way I think it can be improved without it becoming too verbose (frankly I think even one word more in each of the places where Linux is mentioned would be too verbose, the brevity of "Windows", "Mac OS X" and "Linux" is important, and on your later points a group of three is in a literary manner far more pleasing than four or five items would be). I don't believe anyone will get confused and expect it to run on any mobile browsers. The downloads page will also have OS-sniffing and so present the most likely of the three options first, including highlighting the relevant option (e.g. Mac OS X 10.4 users will get that button glowing and the others slightly faded, Ubuntu users will get a sentence on how to get it in Ubuntu highlighted in some way).
It would be more clear and honest to say "which runs on Gnome/Linux" or
"FreeDesktop Linux" or just "Fedora, Debian and other awesome Free Desktops".
If you start putting in some particular flavours of Linux then you get bickering about which ones get included.
And if you're of the opinion that Android and such aren't marketed as Linux and there for won't be confusing. Think about the way Ubuntu isn't marketed as Linux either (because it isn't true and because it's not helpful to scare away new users), will we have "which runs on Linux and Ubuntu" to account for that?
No. Ubuntu is still recognised as Linux. And putting this in combination with highlighting the relevant information on the download page, I don't think it'll be an issue.

You're right about the need for more information on how to source Inkscape; I don't believe you're at all right about starting with the text on the front page. What it says is correct. The modifications only need to take place on the download page.

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback on the design. :-)
Concerning the text included:
It's important to note that when I made the mockups I filled them with some example text to show contextually the kind of content which might be placed in any certain area. This content will need to be finalized When I wrote "which runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux", I was assuming that the website might attract users who:
1. were completely new to Inkscape and perhaps to FOSS in general. 2. were running operating systems that _don't_ package and release Inkscape ready for installation. Windows and Mac OS X are two very well known systems that normal people might recognize, even if they "suck at computers". 3. if they were running a Linux distribution they would probably know that (I was an Ubuntu user - even they know Ubuntu is a Linux distribution - not total idiots :-) ) 4. if running a Linux distribution might not necessarily go to the website to get Inkscape (what with command lines, package managers, etc).
But I agree that it needs to be changed - it's inaccurate as stands.
I too think that there needs to be some serious consideration given to "Linux users" on how to install Inkscape - there are so many ways to get it depending on which distro people run, that it would be useful to have that information available on the website. Packaged .deb and .rpm files would be even better...
As for Android being a Linux distro or not, as far as I'm aware it is never marketed as such. I assume many home entertainment devices exist that run on Linux distros, but most normal people probably won't even know/care/try to install Inkscape on them.
So, as stated earlier, all text on the mockups (and hence included into html/css prototypes) was initially created as contextual example text - to be refined/replaced/whatever. Design without content is decoration. If anyone is willing to help out on the copywriting side of things that would be fantastic! Then maybe we can avoid me writing silly filler content to design for.
Cheers, duckgoesoink
