Just to illustrate how huge of an impact this project has had, last year Google funded two students to work for Inkscape on implementing 'gaussian blur'. Gaussian Blur is what allows things like drop shadows, feathering, blurring, etc. This was a very significant and challenging feature to get implemented, and required a good bit of effect to get it perfected, but those two students put in the bones for it.

To give an idea of how profoundly this has improved Inkscape, take a look at these examples, that almost seem photorealistic:

Heya all, I stubbed out a space on our wiki to brainstorm about good ideas (which some have done on the wiki). Please take a chance to help motivate that wiki page, edit out the old 2006 ideas (as it is currently just that list), and come up with some stellar ideas:

Some comments on the items listed there...

PDF Export: I think we found this ended up being more Cairo than Inkscape. I don't know if cairo is doing GSoC, but I'm betting that this one would be most successful if they were mentoring it directly.

Memory Optimization: We didn't get many submissions for this one last year. Maybe this needs to be more clearly defined?

Inkboard: Definitely agree more work's needed here. We've had good results from past GSoC efforts.

New Grids: There is development work underway on this, so if this is a GSoC project, we'd need to coordinate it.

SVG Filters: The listed tasks are done, but it could make sense to expand to more filters. What other filters would be worth doing?

Other ideas that might be appropriate as GSoC's...

* DOM work? * Refactoring more C chunks into C++? * Font selector stabilization * Animation experimentation / proof of concepts * 2geom integration * Multi-page SVG * Hyperlinking

I'm here looking at the Finnish equivalent for GSoC called Kesäkoodi organized by the Finnish Centre for Open Source Solutions (COSS)

I might me applying for Inkscape related project there. As I know the filters already, it propably would be most efficient to apply for filters-related project.

So, I'd like to hear some ideas, what should that project include. I am now working on feBlend filter primitive support, so don't propose that ;)

Anyone have thoughts on prioritization of these? Some like feMerge sound like they might be more useful later, while others like feOffset sound pretty easy and sound like they could directly enhance GaussianBlur. Others like feTile and feImage may not be as critical as other filters, since we currently have ways of tiling and inserting images.

However, for full support of SVG 1.1 we need them all ;) Looks like for SVG Mobile (which defines SVG Tiny and SVG Basic), filters are not necessary for SVG Tiny and are for SVG Basic. If you all haven't taken a look at the way the spec is written, its good to see in relationship to Inkscape's plans:

We still don't support underline/strikethrouigh etc. and users request it

That looks neat. Is there anything we need to do to make Inkscape a valid project for you to work on?

Well, all I know about the arrangements is what I've read from that URL. (which was the English version as I pasted it, but now I get only the Finnish version O.o )

That is, for now there is nothing necessary for you to do, but if I could name some contact person from Inkscape project, it would be good. I think this is about the same, as mentor in GSoC, though here it's not required to have one.
