In the latest SourceForge.net site-wide email, Inkscape is rated as the second top project for the last two-month period. Also, it's number one for some days now in activity, in the current statistics page.
Due to the 0.44 release, it has surpassed many other famous projects. Congratulations to all!

Disagree. The change happened weeks before the prereleases where there was one surge in web activity which never really disappeared. My guess is we won some (unknown to me) community at that time.
There's a potential explanation : the work done by Chrisjia. Translation of Inkscape in Chinese may have opened some doors :)

I looked into how the stats are scored a while back. They use a logarithmic method of scoring, but they sum from several different items. Thus, going from 10 to 100 downloads increases your score the same amount as going from 10,000 to 100,000 downloads.
So actually, while download numbers help, also look at large increases in other SF things. For instance, increased use of the tracker (due to translators posting patches, or new users reporting bugs) could be contributing more to our score than the raw download numbers.
