I made the tool selection buttons along the side larger than the buttons for various commands up top.
While I'd experimented with this a while back and abandoned it, it's since been suggested a number of times (most recently by Jon), and Xara appears to do so as well, I decided to try it again.
See what y'all think...

I think that sounds great for now, but I'm sure that the hierarchy of those buttons will become more visually prevalent when we change to standard GTK+ widgets.
I like how the gimp has the nice color tools without a beveled edge until a tool is selected, and then it is the only one depressed. That is a very effective way to highlight that a tool is selected.

True, but the beveled edge makes it a tiny bit easier to delinate the icons and hit them without thinking about it very much. In the case of the GIMP i noticed this after switching from 1.2 to 1.3 which has an even more crowded toolbox.
However, Inkscape has a single column of icons which is much easier to hit and ideally they will be flush against the edge if you maximise the window so you will be able to go right to the edge and only have to really aim in the vertical.
Standard widgets should make me very happy though, so it is all pretty much moot.
