btw, one problem with requesting 0 width for the select toolbar -- it shrinks to 0 width when detached.
Ouch. What would you suggest? removing 0 or removing detachability?

I think removing detachability for now would be the least annoying of the two.
I need to sit down and come up with a general solution for some of these finer points with Gtk -- this is in the same family of problems as doing flow-based layouts.
