which makes Ubuntu install all the dependencies that went into building the inkscape package that comes with ubuntu, and then compiling the inkscape bzr trunk as always seemed straight forward. Just in case you weren't aware of `build-dep`. Also this probably only works with the "current" version of Ubuntu, seeing it's most likely to have libraries at the versions inkscape trunk needs.

Well following the above instructions from Terry I now have a real live functioning Inkscape0.19pre1 working on a linux partition! Now all I have to do is rig my Ubuntu partition to do the things I am used to on slackware.
I can take it from here. Thanks to all who offered help.
