[Fwd: Re: Contact + Question]
Heya, for all you writers out there, a new magazine that would be good to submit howtos and articles to (and get paid for!)

Hi Jon,
The basic approach is to "pitch" an idea to me. If it's a good one, then I'll assign it to you (see the example assignment letter below) with a due date. Here are things to keep in mind when writing articles for Tux:
- We prefer "How To" articles over any other type of article
- The audience is the average desktop user - try to stick with
point-and-click operations 3. AVOID passive voice like the plague. For example, write this way:
"You can configure the colors by opening the "Colors" dialog box. Click Tools->Configure...etc."
DO NOT write this way:
"Configuring colors can be done with the "Colors" dialog box. Opening the dialog box is done by clicking "Tools-...etc."
Otherwise, most of an editor's time is spent converting the passive voice sentences into active voice. Too much of that, and editors tend to avoid those authors for future articles!
I look forward to your ideas!
-Nicholas
Your article "_________" has been accepted for possible publication in TUX magazine. We expect your article will cover the following: Your opinions about something, and that it be kept around 1,000 or more words.
Work with the editor-in-chief (ed@...851...) on your article until the article is in its final form.
The deadline for the final version of your article is ______. The final version of your article must be sent to editor@...852... Keep in mind that we do not accept multiple drafts of articles, and therefore, we expect a complete and final version on or before the deadline.
If your article is published, we pay $300 for "how-to" articles and $100 for reviews. If your article falls into another category, we will negotiate a payment.
All writing is done on speculation. If TUX magazine decides to use the work, we will purchase first rights and compilation rights to the article. However, we are under no obligation to publish the work. If the article is selected for publication, your payment will be "_______".
Your article will be copyedited according to TUX style, and English grammar and spelling, though we ask that you carefully review the materials you submitted for accuracy and completeness. We expect that you submit your article in text-only format and that any figures, tables, listings and sidebars be sent as separate files; provide titles or captions for all figures, tables, listings and sidebars, and indicate in the text where such items should be placed.
Please send a photo of yourself, a brief bio, and your mailing address along with your article.
Once your article is submitted, it will be in the publication queue and therefore cannot be submitted elsewhere unless 1) TUX magazine formally rejects the article, or 2) the author notifies TUX magazine of his/her intent and TUX magazine agrees to release the article at that time.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send email to editor@...851..., and please cc ed@...852...

Hello,
I have the following questions:
How to get into the writing pool?
What the standard writing fare is for TUX?
How to submit an article?
Where to send press releases for new software releases?
Who to submit a request for a review to?
Thanks and your magazine concept is great!

Their sister magazine had (has?) a similar clause to pay substantially reduced price when published online (instead of print).
I felt it was inappropriate to write an article without knowing where they were going to publish it a head of time (since I didn't want to write for the small amount). The editor thought it was inappropriate of me to question this ... so I ended up not writing for them.

I wonder why this magazine does this "on speculation". Serious freelancers would not waste their time ... but then again there aren't very many other related print magazines to write for.

Because "they can". People are willing to work under these conditions, so they're able to make these sorts of demands.
