I think it's a good idea, so long as there are volunteers to handle approving account requests.

One thought I've had is if it can be configured to work with LDAP, we could try to shift the project to being more LDAP-based. I have zero LDAP experience, and haven't made any progress on setting this up on inkscape.org, but that's sort of the direction I've wanted to go. Especially since we've also talked about setting up additional software like a forum, translation tool, bug tool, etc. Having to force people to have 7+ separate logins for all these inkscape tools would be annoying at best for both user and admin, so if most could be set up to use LDAP, then it'd save a lot of time all around.

I've been working with Christoph on this matter and I asked him to propose this idea on the mailing lists. We've made a few changes without asking. We've upgraded the wiki to version 1.10. A few weeks back I enabled email for password reminders at mental's request. And now I have set the wiki to only allow edits by users who have configured and confirmed a email address. I hope we don't have to resort to manual account creation, because it is work for someone to do, and because wiki edits are usually rather spontaneous (asking for an account could take hours if not days). But if that is the only method available to put an end to the spam that is causing our wiki editors a large amount of wasted time, then we will have to do so.
