hello!
I create many objects on canvas without using of layers. Sometimes it is impossible to get any object. Inkscape has option allows us to lock object but this is very uncomfortable. Also that doesn't enable us to unlock particular object. Have you ever thought about adding new feature - locking/unlocking object on canvas like in Corel Draw? This is very cool stuff. It doesn't exclude functionality of layers but adds possibility of creating simple things in simple way. Think about icons. Many icons are created on one layer. But managing such objects in further future is terrible. I propose to add new entry to context menu. Clicking on it will show a small padlock on object (like in Corel). I hope that isn't hard to coding but makes sense in my opinion. I also hope I made myself clear. :)

Further information from me:
In Corel Draw, LMB does not select locked objects, but RMB does and displays a context menu that allows one to unlock the object. Most of the time it's useful because the usual way of doing things is to first select and then right-click to bring up the menu. As a side note, the context menu is actually context sensitive in Corel Draw, e.g. the items depend on what's selected. We could also use this - e.g. add an option "put on path" if a text and a path is selected, or a submenu "boolean operations" if more than 2 path-convertible objects are selected. This information could even be added to verbs so that each verb knows what objects it has to have in order to complete successfully, and a list of matching verbs is built automatically.
To the original poster: Currently to unlock an object you have to use the Find dialog.

In fact most recent GTK+ allows creating widgets on canvas. One of GIMP developers (mitch?) has some working prototype for that.
What we could *also* do with that, for instance, is make Inkscape temporary display hidden objects and buttons over them to unhide those we need be shown again.
