Re: [Inkscape-devel] window layout configurable
- "File" toolbar which would repeat the File menu.
We even have a patch for this in the RFE tracker:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=902331&grou...
However the patch has a button size mismatch with the top panel buttons which looks ugly. Also before we make more than one horizontal toolbar, I want these toolbars to be totally configurable by dragging, so I could e.g. position a number of short toolbars in one row. I think someone mentioned that GTK 2.4 has support for this but we don't use it yet.
- When saving a document, suggest a name like "untitled.svg".
Ted, is this hard to do?

I can't wait for 2.4! :) The new file dialogs, new threads, cleaner widget layouts. Yaay. I bet that everyone on the gimpwin-dev mailing list is begging Tor Lillqvist to make the 2.4 builds right now.

Okay, I think that this is in CVS right now. I also changed it so that the save directory defaults to your home directory instead of the pwd. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. It is probably more intuitive for new users - but it is not how other applications work.

This is great! You guys are unbelievable!
I think it would also be nice to have it working like untitled-1, untitled-2 as you fire up different instances of Inkscape, so if you have just saved untitled-1 you will be automatically suggested to save as untitled-2 within the next instance... Or is it possible? I don't know if different instances communicate in some way.

I think you are right here. Some people fire up Inkscape from different places because they want it to be. But newbies feel lost as in the current file dialogue you can't just press a button and go home (before gtk 2.4 afaik).
...
Anway, all you guys do simply rocks!

I never found "Untitled" to be a helpful default name, and I think it is a good idea to give a little more information using a more informative label such as "Document" (implies Word Processing Document), "Spreadsheet", "Video", or in this case something like "Drawing".
Rather than using Untitled, Dia instead suggests Drawing-N, I hope you will consider making this minor change.
