I passed word along to Mental (the developer of the feature); he's going to poke around at it. He asked what you mean by save the setting?

I meant that the inkscape:groupmode attribute didn't seem to get saved in the SVG file. So in my case where I have have a lot of groups I have to go back and set that parameter on each one every time I load the drawing.
