I was a bit surprised to read that if you don't use text-to-path you will need the font to be resident on the machine. Using text-to-path is very undesirable because it leads to gigantic PDF files yet if you don't neither GhostScript nor Acrobat (after conversion of the PS to PDF) can find it. This is true of both TTF or Type 1 fonts and even though the fonts are installed. What does one have to do???
Anyway, are there any plans to implement font embedding in PS output (and in PDF later), both for Type 1 and TTF fonts? IMO this is not a minor issue and I was surprised that Inkscape does not already support font embedding. Font subsetting would be great, too: otherwise you'll be limited to free fonts.
