I've had a problem with inkscape fairly frequently when I start it the first time after starting X (I use XFCE on gentoo). It doesn't happen every time, but frequently, and if I restart X, it usually goes away.
The problem is that I can't actually edit anything on the canvas, whether I open a new file or an existing one. All the buttons and dialogs behave correctly - except they don't do anything on the canvas.
Is this a known problem? It's persistent for me through several versions, and I'm using both .44 and .45-pre1.
Right now, however, I've just upgraded to XFCE4.4 and gtk2+-2.10.9 and I can't edit the canvas at all in either version, even after rebooting the whole computer. I'm not sure if I should recompile inkscape, but it doesn't seem right (I upgraded gtk from a previous 2.10 version, not sure exactly which).
I searched bugs and didn't see anything like this.
Thanks.

Hmm, odd.

Hmm, I've not heard about this from anyone before. If it's a gtk problem, then my guess is that a similar problem should show up in other gtk (or gtkmm) based applications.
In any case, it couldn't hurt to recompile inkscape and try that, but probably your most likely path to a solution would be through the gtk or xfce folks.
Let us know how it goes.

I compiled inkscape .45-pre2 to no avail. I don't like this. I'm trying some posts elsewhere to see if I can figure it out.
It's unfortunate, since I use Inkscape heavily for my business, which is not going to wait for me to figure this out :)
I'll keep you updated if I find out anything. Thanks.
