saving in windows friendly format
How can I save an inkscape svg file into a format that Windows can use? I tried saving it as an .eps, but Windows Paint Shop Pro barfed on it.
Is there a linux native way to create a jpeg, bitmap, etc?

You can just "File|Export Bitmap..." to save out as a PNG image.
Then one of the more common conversion tools on Linux also works fine on Windows. It's ImageMagick and you can find it at
(Inkscape exports as PNG only mainly to keep it's focus on vector drawing and to not reinvent the wheel of image conversion that dedicated tools handle so well)
