The desktop_new() works and return the desktop's name.

b) Related to the dbus API docs - would it be possible to make the documentation available on the Inkscape Wiki? Not every platform has the tools installed to build it using 'dbus/builddocs.sh' (e.g. on osx the list of (otherwise unneeded) dependencies in order to install 'xmlto' via MacPorts is huge) - yet users might be interested to read more about it.
