‘GIMP’ does not refer to itself with ‘the’: http://www.gimp.org/
Oh, I was not aware of that! I thought it was called The GNU Image Manipulation Program. When I first was aware of gimp, their website and manual and forums, and everything associated with the program, called it "The GIMP". I do realize that most people refer to it as GIMP, but from everything I knew, the proper name is The GIMP. Perhaps that has changed in recent years?
My opinion is that, for many people around the world, ‘the’ contains a quite unusual sound which can be hard to pronounce, and say/write only ‘GIMP’ is much more concise and simple. Actually, ‘The GIMP’ is certainly still correct but less practical in most cases. ‘This is the official website of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP).’ The developed version uses ‘the’, the acronym does not keep it. -- Sylvain
