is voting working for gallery moderation?

Hi Friends, I feel like I should make a report about the current system for gallery moderation, which uses voting. As brilliant as it is (in my opinion) it doesn't seem like it will be sustainable for the long run. So far, I can't really say that it's been successful, for more than a week at a time.
So far, we have not been able to attract a moderator who can either (a) comprehend the system, or (b) stick around for more than a day or 2. Or perhaps it could be explained by not finding someone motivated enough, I'm not sure.
We have had several volunteers to moderate, but they seem to have done so in order to acquire enough access to see what it's about. Once they see, they take one or 2 voting actions, and never show up again. (I haven't deleted them off the member list, in case they might start working again, but I might as well, since they could always re-apply, if they change their mind.)
We did have one moderator who stuck around for quite a while, but whom needed a good deal of support (more than really is appropriate).
Fortunately for the gallery, when a moderator flags an item, it becomes hidden. So the gallery doesn't suffer. It's really only the database that suffers, since the images (or other items) are never really deleted. They're just piling up on the Moderation Page. (Well, occasionally Moini reports spam, which I can vote on, which causes it to be deleted. But if I'm the one who reports it (and I do most of it), no one else ever casts the final votes.)
I'm not sure what the best solution would be. One option would be to go to the traditional type of system, where one moderator can delete an item. And certainly, fewer moderators would be needed for that. Currently, one person could handle all the moderation, with that type of system (and actually does, for the most part).
For the voting system, we need a 2nd moderator to make the final final vote. Also, this type of system works best when 2 or more moderators are communicating, in addition to voting.
For a little while, I could post a message to the Docs list calling moderators in to clean up the page, and that would work. But lately, it's not.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what other solutions would be possible.
Since developers are currently very busy working on hackfests and 1.0, I don't think it will hurt to just let things pile up on the Moderation page, for now. But just so I'm not the only one who knows it, the Moderation Page is already long enough to make it a good half hour to an hour's work for an experienced moderator to come in and clean up the page. A new moderator would need more time, and maybe much more.
(Well, at least it would take that long if they want to read the messages and participate. Of course it would just take 15 minutes to go in and vote to delete everything, regardless....in which case, why not go to a traditional system after all.)
Just a report, for what it's worth :-)
All best, brynn

- Not exactly true. I check for spam daily. And I check the moderation queue about once a month. Martin sometimes goes over it, too.

I suppose you and Martin see the same Moderation Page that I do. It currently has 47 items waiting for votes, or comments. (one of them has been there for almost a year, and just needing 1 vote to clear it off) Maybe 10 or 12 of them are waiting for deadlines or comments, but most of them could be cleared off with one vote.
I realize that you only want to vote on certain things. The problem is that we need at least one more moderator who wants to moderate on all items. And the problem with that is that no one seems to be interested.
I'm also growing frustrated with the routine of contacting people who don't bother to read the CoC and upload unrelated photos. Is there some way we could automate this? Like click one button and it sends them the appropriate message?
Or could we make the Photo category only available to admins or on request? For the most part, the only photos which are acceptable are coming from admins anyway.

Hi Brynn,
I think what we have a is a lack of community.
I was hoping that the new forums would engender a bit of community on inkscape.org which would allow us to recruit people. If we don't have a place people want to be, then we won't have a space where we will find them.
Put this into contrast with chat.inkscape.org, which is a nice place to be, to hang out and chat. It's got people hanging about all the time (the structure of the site means that it looks like this) and so it's be a little easier to get a new person into moderating there.
So for now I'd say the most important thing is making the community space better so we have more people who would be interested in moderating. (also improvements to the tooling would be good)

I'm not sure why the new forum would attract people who want to moderate the gallery. True, it might engender more use of the gallery, especially for screenshots.
I'm willing to wait and see. But I'm still having some big doubts about the voting system being sustainable. At the moment, and for the most part since it started, it's not working.
Thanks, brynn

You could be right, but the best I can do is give you admin powers to delete things at your will.
Martin,

As I said, personally I like the system. As long as it doesn't create a problem for that Moderation Page to get huge, I don't mind wait and see.
(Although regarding the forum, it might end up being better if I did have the admin powers. But that can wait at least a few more weeks.)
Thanks for clearing out a lot of items yesterday, Maren!

Martin,

#agree
maybe we need some super moderators as calling others just to be able to delete something is not very nice.
personally one problem i get is that i can't be notified of new submissions in gallery. maybe i missed something?

You can get to your messaging settings via the user profile (there's a button at the bottom).
Are you subscribed to new gallery posts?
If you are, and it doesn't work, please make a bug report at https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web/issues
