Hi Friends, I'm finally starting work on listing all the known external Inkscape extensions (on the same page of Inkscape Community, where I have all the tutorials listed). While we have gathered some info about some extensions, regarding which version they work with and on which operating system (mostly I suspect Maren gathered what we have, which looks like is only for 0.91, and probably Linux), by and large that info is missing.
I'm just wondering if it's ok if I add a new item to the Community To-Do List page of the website, asking for volunteer extensions testers. I can use the info for the list I plan to finish creating and maintain on Inkscape Community. And the info can be used as well, for the extensions which are uploaded to the gallery.
If there are no objections, I'll go ahead an add it.
Thanks, brynn
Hi brynn,
I may have missed something - in what way is your extension page different from the extension gallery? Is it only for extensions not listed in the gallery? https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=extension/
Do you have a link to your page?
Anyway, I'd like to get an overview of existing extensions out there in the web, especially the ones that do similar work to the ones I am contributing to.
Regarding the gallery:
Is there a way to add an extension to the gallery without uploading a zip file? I would like to link only to github, as I don't like having to reupload it for every new version: That's duplicate work and tends to be forgotten, especially if the inkscape website is not the main distribution channel.
Best Regards,
Max
Short answer:
It will be different in 2 ways. 1 - It will include all known extensions, and 2 - it will only be links to download pages, not any actual extensions. Here's the page, but it only has tutorials and a couple of books on it now: https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php.
As far as I understand, you don't have to host your extensions in the gallery. If you prefer to use a repo like github, you can just put the link to it in your gallery posting. (But for newbies, it would be nice to include specific info about exactly what to download. I'm not exactly a newbie, but I still get confused when I have to go to github to download something.)
I think the gallery category *could be* the main distribution channel. But I'm not sure how that could be controlled. Once it becomes known more widely, I would guess that most extensions will be found there. But I think extensions will always be scattered around, to some extent.
Long answer: Currently external Inkscape extensions are scattered far and wide across the internet. By my count, that is approximately (roughly) 300 extensions! A few of us are working on contacting as many extension authors as we can, and informing them about the gallery, which might not have even existed, when they created their extensions.
But when I say "a few", really only one person is doing that work, with me and another person (Maren) providing support when we can. The work is going very slow, as far as I can tell. I think the reason it's going so slow, is that person (Mark Shafer) (I probably mispelled the last name) is also attempting to bring older extensions up to date, at the same time. If we were to focus only on contacting the authors, it would probably go faster. This is our working page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape_Extensions.
Between that page, the original Extensions Repository (which was only sparsely used by extension authors, afaict) (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Extension_repository), and the gallery's extensions category (https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=extension/), that's all the extensions we know of.
I just want to have sort of a master list of extensions, because as I provide support for Inkscape (primarily in forums) I'm sick and tired of searching hither and yon to help users find extensions. Plus, having such a list will allow users to search on their own.
If someday, we finally have all the external extensions in the gallery, I'll happily delete my list of links (to download pages). I'm not sure if that would ever happen, but I'd be happy if it did.
My desire to put out a call for testers will benefit both the comprehensive list I'm making, as well as the gallery category. I'm also getting tired of explaining to people who are searching for extensions, that 'here are all our extensions, but we have no idea which ones work, which version they work with, or on which systems'. So even when we have them all in one place, we'll still be reciting the same lines, unless we can gather that info about them.
All best, brynn

Allow me one silly question, please: is it possible for us to announce the gallery in the main inkscape website so the inkscape extension developers can publish them in our gallery?

Hi Victor, Well, the gallery is the first item in the Community tab, in the main menu. There's also a promonent link on the front page of the website.
And more specifically about extensions, at the bottom of the guide for writing extensions (https://inkscape.org/en/develop/extensions/) it mentions uploading it to the gallery (or a link to it). It even gives steps how to do it.
I can't think of any way to make sure that /all/ extensions are in the gallery. But I think eventually, most of them will be there.
Or did I miss your point?

Actually I just had another thought about this.
Is it unreasonable to expect that the extension developer knows which versions or operating systems their extension works with? Why not make sure the developer shares that when the extension is released to the community?
Would it be possible to have extra fields be displayed, in the upload form, when the Extensions category is chosen? Is there any way to configure the upload form, so that info has to be provided, before it will upload?
Or if not mandatory fields, would it be possible to just display a prominent notice, when the Extensions category is selected, asking the developer to please, please, please include that info?
All best, brynn

Between that page, the original Extensions Repository (which was only sparsely used by extension authors, afaict) (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Extension_repository), and the gallery's extensions category (https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=extension/ ), that's all the extensions we know of.

Hi brynn,
I may have missed something - in what way is your extension page different from the extension gallery? Is it only for extensions not listed in the gallery? https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=extension/
Do you have a link to your page?
Anyway, I'd like to get an overview of existing extensions out there in the web, especially the ones that do similar work to the ones I am contributing to.
Regarding the gallery:
Is there a way to add an extension to the gallery without uploading a zip file? I would like to link only to github, as I don't like having to reupload it for every new version: That's duplicate work and tends to be forgotten, especially if the inkscape website is not the main distribution channel.

Yes, it could be something like check boxes for the systems and versions.
We do already have the possibility for the developer to use tags to indicate this. But I haven't seen them being used consistently. Some developers seem to use some of them, but not all, and not all devs are using them.
(In some cases, I'm just happy that the developer has uploaded to the gallery at all. But on the other hand, it would be SO nice to have this info available for users.)
I can understand how it would take some extra time and energy (for the website developers) to make checkboxes or something. But I would be happy if just a sentence or 2 could be displayed. Something like "Please indicate all Inkscape versions which this extension is known to work with, as well as all operating systems."
I'm not sure what you mean with "extract and copy" or "need to install". Unless it's something about the Django code?

No no. You said it right. I was just wondering if we could promote inkscape extensions more widely and more clearly. I use inkscape since 2007 but just recently understood how to use and enable some of the extensions... hehe.
Hopefully not all inkscape users are as distracted as I am/was. :)

It's just that not all people who write extensions will see that, or necessarily want to put them in the gallery. That's why my original message was about finding people to test them.

Hello,
Victor, Maren and Brynn, could you test the function I've just added to the upload form. It adds a drop down of selectable tags which only appear when you select a category that this group of tags is associated with. It uses the same selection as the gallery/category pages do (so for extensions we have a ready made list of options)

It may need some tweaks, but I wanted to get the format in front of you sooner so you can try it out.

Great work. Maybe if the dropdown is changed to a multiselect on click become more easy to use, and become a dropdown on unfocus. Just a idea.
One question in licensed type why not put in the dropdown a extra info in GPLV2 "(as inkscape)" or something similar to help integrating things into the codebase.
Regards, Jabier.

Gracias Jabier,
And thanks everyone for testing.
Great work. Maybe if the dropdown is changed to a multiselect on click become more easy to use, and become a dropdown on unfocus. Just a idea.
I did experiment with a multi-select and even a checkbox based widget. The advantages of the dropdowns where it's use of existing code (no need to include more js) and it's consistency with other dropdowns overall.
One question in licensed type why not put in the dropdown a extra info in GPLV2 "(as inkscape)" or something similar to help integrating things into the codebase.
This is harder to think about. Changing the name is an administrative action (not a coding one) so one could change it any time. But it'd also change the display, the search text and any other place GPL would show otherwise.

- One disadvantage I see with the current version is that it may look like people need to upload their extension three times, once for each OS - or like they can only choose one OS.
Maybe it's just me, but I think that could become a source of misunderstandings.

Or maybe all the whole tags can be handled by one only multiselect with 3 groups. https://inkscape.org/en/~jabiertxof/%E2%98%85screenshot-from-2018-06-19-22-2...

Hello,
Victor, Maren and Brynn, could you test the function I've just added to the upload form. It adds a drop down of selectable tags which only appear when you select a category that this group of tags is associated with. It uses the same selection as the gallery/category pages do (so for extensions we have a ready made list of options)

Really nice work Martin. I like it. I think it is a good start.

I agree about the multiselect (but don't like the design too much, I think it's better to have the items more separate, like it's done in Martin's version).
Jabier, as a non-smartphone owner, I wonder how does multiselect work without a keyboard? (we've recently had an m23 user who didn't even think of using Ctrl to select multiple options...).
Click-activate, click-deactivate would be useful then, I assume?

Thanks Maren for the feedback. I agree with you is better separated. The problem is the list is big for multiselect if we want all options displayed without scroll. Maybe is more clear the Martin version, the problem in Martin version is we not know we can select multiple items.
About the select with click, it can be done with a bit of JS.
Maybe there is some extended JS plugins in the net we can use more fancy. There is some in the net I see that make a combobox like martin but each option with a check on one side to active/inactive. This seems to me better UI.

Yes, that looks exactly like the solution that was chosen for the multiselect in m23, too (but I think only CSS was used to display a checkmark or an empty box as a bg image - however, that won't work on mobile, without Ctrl key, I believe, so no matter what, it's going to need some js - maybe not a whole library, though.).

Oh, thanks Martin!
When I test, I can see some extra blank space shows up, when Extensions category is selected. But there aren't any buttons, it's just blank space underneath the message box.
I'm using SeaMonkey browser. Let me try with Firefox....
No, it's still blank space with Firefox too.
Thanks again, brynn

The dropdowns should appear on the right. The blank space is expected.
Martin,
Oh, I see them now. When you open the dropdown menu to choose Extensions, the dropdown menu is covering up where the new ones appear. So they aren't very evident at first.
Well, maybe extension developers will be smarter, or more alert than me, haha.
Thanks for the improvements! I think they will be very helpful, if the developers will use them!
Now we just need to test these few (relatively few) extensions which are already in the gallery. Then I or another moderator can curate. Or else contact the developers and ask them to edit?
Any opinions if it would be inappropriate to contact them? I could just use the website messaging.
All best, brynn
