Hi Milo,
It's intentional that there is one link for 1.0 and the betas, and one for master/development.
The 1.0 branch will soon be forked, and both will be different. Development on master will continue, for the then next major Inkscape version, with new features and experiments, and possibly major changes behind the curtains, while development on the 1.x branch will concentrate on fixing things and polishing, for 1.0 and the next point versions and will not go through any major infrastructure changes, to not disrupt a working release.
I find the platforms page is ugly - it's not meant for representing the release or the branch, just as a quick overview. There are no release notes there and no info about how to use the various downloads. I don't find it too useful for end users. Why do you think it's better than the page for master?

Well, I'm no programmer, so maybe I don't quite understand why there should be two Download pages for "current" development versions in the first place. But if this seems necessary, consider the following, as the link doesn't go to the master download page directly, as you say it does.
Currently the link sends a user to: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-master/?latest=1
Instead of my first suggestion, why not instead send the user directly to: https://inkscape.org/release/master/platforms/
