Duarte, all these problems you're having I'm also having. The link editor is too slow for me too.
I already had a problem of losing the translation that was doing, it happened when I clicked twice to open the link and edit. So when I see a new link, I get the English version, see the settings and delete the link and create a new translated version.
I don't always do this, some links have a globe icon and other text, also some links equal in translated version not appear when publishing, then I create them again.
The link with globe icon give less problem than the link displayed as text.

Link editor has always been very slow for me, not just right now.  But
like I said, its no big deal for me, download links themselves don't
need translation anyway since they just read the file extension, so its
quite ok.
