Hi Max,
welcome and thanks for joining us here on the mailing list!
Yuichiro Tomita, another new Japanese translator, has also joined us only recently - you may want to coordinate with them, e.g. in our translators' chat channel (https://chat.inkscape.org/channel/team_translation).
Yuichiro has worked on the .po file, those translations will be available on the website shortly.
Echoing Duarte, please (both) read through the wiki article about website translations.
As the website has no working 'undo' and a few bugs / workflow inconsistencies, and no way to restrict translator access to only their own language, one needs to be very careful working on it.
I would recommend starting out with the news articles, as the workflow there is easier to follow than when translating web pages.
Most importantly, when anything is unclear or a mishap happens, don't be shy to ask for help, either here or in the chat. It's almost normal that the website breaks in some way when someone new works with it. We've all gone through that, unfortunately. Communication is the most important thing! We all know that mistakes happen - it's just important to get them fixed quickly.
I hope that at some point, we'll be able to replace the current system with a web-based translation server, which will make all these warnings unnecessary.
Let us know when you're ready and whether you've got any questions regarding the Wiki content.
Kind Regards, Maren

Dear Translators,
I've had a look through your website and have noticed there are several missing translations for Japanese and would love to help out. I'm half British-Japanese and in my first year of university. I also have a basic understanding of html. I've never worked on anything online though and am excited to see what it's like.
Nice to correspond with you all,
Max Mann
