Dear Inkscape Developers
Actually I have been using Inkscape for several years. I am now interested to contribute as a translator of in my native language "Indonesia"
I am just wondering whether I can contribute to Inkscape as one of translators. I have experiences in translating several open source software (UI translator) as the main (Indonesian) translator: LyX, Avogadro and JMol.
I have downloded the id.po from http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/changes
Another question is how can I submit the translated id.po. Can I just send it to this mailing-list or to another email?
Best Regards WAS

You're welcome to join. It's courteous to coordinate your efforts with the previous translator of your language (you'll find his email in the .po header), but I don't think he'll object since his last contribution was in 2007.
I have downloded the id.po from http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/changes
The link to the latest id.po file is here, please make sure you have the latest version (you probably do): http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/annotate/head:/po/i...

The preferred way to submit translations so that they don't get lost is to use the bug tracker at Launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape
Please, register in Launchpad, report a new bug against Inkscape and attach your translation. You don't have to finish it 100% to submit it, you attach you file to the same bug as you progress translating. We're very close to releasing Inkscape now so it's better to submit more often.
I think that's all you need to know. You can find more information here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Translation_information If not, feel free to ask on this list.
Good luck and don't hesitate, your translation can probably still make it into 0.48.

I didn't find any other date and I don't know if the release slipped again, so it's reasonable to heed that deadline. But of course you can send your translation anytime, even after 0.48 (it will be in the next version, possibly 0.48.1). I would recommend, as I wrote above, to send what you just finished often to try to make it into 0.48.

Hello there,
Thank you for helping with the translation to Bahasa Indonesia. :)
I should note for the sake of collaboration that I'm having the lead Indonesian translator from my project work on this very same thing as well, as of 6/14/2010.
Currently we're at 499 fuzzy, 4265 untranslated with id.po, and will hopefully be able to post our first update to Launchpad in the coming days.
Feel free to review and share your thoughts. :)

Hi
I don't know how to coordinate for this translation However, at the moment I have translated 11% what I have done is the following: a. Refining the previous translations b. Translating untranslated strings and some from fuzzy
I am now concentrating to look at all Inkscape main menus and submenus, to make sure the basic UI are all translated.

Hello again,
I've set up the Launchpad bug report with our Indonesian translation current as of this date -- feel free to download our PO file and compare to yours to see if we can merge our files together:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/597066
Depending on the outcome, we may have to agree on where to focus on our efforts -- since its critical to my project to have a comprehensive Inkscape translation available for Indonesian users, I could definitely use your help to expedite the process. :)
In addition to the User Interface, I would like to also have at least the Tutorials, User Manual and Windows installer translated if at all possible. Our lead translator is very flexible, so if you would like to continue focusing on the UI portion, I can certainly instruct him to turn his attention to these other vital components. Or vice versa, if you feel (as I do) that excellent-quality reference material is just as important to a user as an excellent UI.
Please let me know what you decide. And of course, feel free to post to that Launchpad thread at any time.
Thank you. ^__~

Thanks, I have downloaded the file. It looks that your translator did not review the previous translation. Even though the strings under "translated" but some are actually still in original language, for example the translation of "_File" is still "_File". There are several words that will not be accepted in the standard Indonesian native language, for example "object" translated into "objek". Indonesian language use "obyek". "Translate X" means moving an object in X direction, it is definitely not "Terjemahan X"
Depending on the outcome, we may have to agree on where to focus on our efforts -- since its critical to my project to have a comprehensive Inkscape translation available for Indonesian users, I could definitely use your help to expedite the process. :)

Currently, I am only interested in UI porsion, and we can cross-review the translations to obtain good quality translations. Not only word-by-word translations but sometimes it must be contextual and comprehendable by Indonesian native users.
I will try to complete the translation of all UI main menus and sub-menus during the weekend and post it to the link you have created.

Hello again,
Thanks for the feedback, I've forwarded this on to our lead translator for his own personal review. While this is still an early draft copy, we certainly want to be able to push him in the best possible direction (since he himself is not too knowledgeable in the program).
In that respect I'm happy we can have this peer review as my own personal knowledge of the language is fairly limited -- my own push is to get the translation done quickly, so as to spur further contributions to the language translation (e.g., phrases that need proofreading will inevitably attract proofreaders).
In any event, thank you for getting back to me on your immediate goals. In that respect, I think the best approach for us to take is to have my lead translator redirect his attention to the Windows Installer and Tutorial translations:
===================
Windows Installer http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/annotate/head:/pack...
Tutorials http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/basic/... http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/shapes... http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/advanc... http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/tracin... http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/callig... http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/elemen... http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/tips/t...
[note: I decided against the User Manual after all since the original hasn't been updated in quite a while, and is in need of its own update unrelated to this translation effort]
===================
If he manages to finish this prior to the completion of id.po, he can always return to help with the non-menu portions of the UI document. This way, we can cover more ground more quickly, and avoid any double-work -- I'd rather we cross-review after a rich and extensive translation is established first (that way, as I said before, we provide enough material to attract more "eyeballs" to our work).
There is no particular rush, but still I thank you for your willingness to expedite the translation of the visible UI portions. :)

Hello, if I may suggest, regarding a single .po file you should agree on some kind of translation rounds because .po files are not especially easy to merge. What I mean is e.g. Arturo's team will work on the file for one day, then he'll upload it to Launchpad. Then Waluyo will take over the translation for one day, review what has been translated, add his own translations and upload the file and so on. Meanwhile the other translator can concentrate on secondary things like the installer and tutorials.
I have also found translator comments a useful tool in this kind of team work. You may agree on some conventions regarding marking strings fuzzy (i.e. translated, not peer reviewed) or adding this information into comments so such unreviewed strings are easy to find.
Hope that helps a little. Good luck!
Please make an agreement about some early version of the file and let me know so I can commit it.

in bzr? What about the key reference?
There is an Inkscape key reference that you can see if you go to help menu. It should be translatable as well, or not?

Well, nothing about that here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/DocumentationTranslation#Keyboard_an...
I haven't translated it, either, although I translated everything else.
But it's part of the website, so it's in the website SVN repo: https://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape_web/trunk/doc
If you want to translate it, there's no problem adding it to the website. Adding it to the help menu would work the same way as with tutorials, i.e. we would have to add another string to .po files with name of the translated keys file.

Actually, I was wrong. The html file says it's generated from keys.xml. See keys* in the doc/ directory in bzr. There are two translations already but I'm not sure if they're currently accessible from the menu (I don't have de or fr locale installed).

Yes, the keys reference is translated into German and French, but these files are not accessible from the menus. FYI, the link is set in share/extensions/inkscape_help_keys.inx. Unfortunately, it is not translatable, but that's something we could easily change in 0.48.1 or 0.49.
I plan to update the keys and extension files this evening (they are still linked to Inkscape 0.47...).

I voted on both bug files and commented in the last one.

Hello all. Well I'm very happy to see so much activity in this thread already. Granted, it seems to be related to something entirely different, so can't say as I can completely follow what's going on. ;)
But just wanted to confirm that the Tutorial POT files I listed are indeed up-to-date, as we will be working on those going forward.

Speaking of which, I should clarify that currently there are only two Indonesian translators, Waluyo and the lead translator on my team (I will refer to him as BlackClaw for ease of typing). Since Waluyo is a veteran Inkscape user, I think he is far better suited to spearhead the translation of id.po. He has agreed to finish the main menu and submenu translations by this weekend, incorporating only what is helpful to him from our draft copy (I imagine a DIFF tool would be helpful here), but otherwise will have carte blanche over what goes into the commit releases going forward.
For the time being, I am having BlackClaw focus exclusively on the installer and tutorial, and in fact he finished the installer translation earlier today:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/597066/comments/4
=======
If or when he returns to work on id.po, then I agree we will coordinate either a translation schedule or a standardized system of translator comments.
Either way, I'm very excited with the progress thus far, and look forward to a comprehensive Indonesian translation after almost a 2-year hiatus. :)

I planned to migrate to bzr in January, but it failed due to a (now fixed) SourceForge issue. I'll try again shortly after 0.48 is released. The (empty) LP page is already available: https://edge.launchpad.net/inkscape-tutorials.

Ah, OK, I didn't hear back about the issue. Also the website is still in SVN.
