Could those of you familiar with Ubuntu's Rosetta let us know their experiences and other info on that system?
What I'm interested in is why we need more than one "master" translation database. Open source projects already have their own SVN, CVS or other repositories, now we have Rosetta which (for me) seems to be independent of those SVNs, and what's even worse, Linspire also created a Rosetta-like system called IRMA:
If I'm not mistaken (I hope I am), this means that in the future we will have at least 3 independently maintained translations for a lot of open source applications.
Anyone with info on Rosetta and/or IRMA please let us know what you think.

Just my 0,02 about a past experience with Rosetta : I had noticed that a parallel translation of Inkscape was existing with Ubuntu, along with the Rosetta tool. In order to clarify this, I opened an account under launchpad/rosetta and took a closer look at those new translations. In fact, it appeared (in those times, should be checked again now) that Ubuntu developpers try to improve the softs they are packaging (as a lot of distributions tend to do), and this includes improving the incomplete translations. However, i didn't understand very well if there is a feedback process toward original work (Debian, specific applications...), and if yes in what does it consist. As far as I know, up to now, the fr translation for Inkscape in Rosetta is simply a duplicate of what's in the svn... But I admit it can be a way of wasting time/energy and duplicating efforts,

I've been using Rosetta for 1-1,5 year(s), mostly for projects whose lead developers want translations to be done via Rosetta (like PDF Split And Merge). Last year there was a huge issue with Scribus translations being imported to Rosetta silently and people getting involved into translation without letting original translators know.
As for Russian community of Rosetta translators, we have managed to convince them to cooperate with two most significant existing translators teams - KDE Russian and GNOME Cyrillic (I'm member of both) - and I haven't heard about issues since then (there were some more before). I don't know how other Ubuntu language teams handle this situation.
For Rosetta there is an internal rule -- importing a translation to Rosetta can be done from permission of developers/translators only.
If you are interested in usability side of Rosetta, it's quite okay, though I don't remember how it handles plural forms. What is not quite okay with Rosetta is that it allows translation without actually looking at GUI, which is very, *very* bad, especially when some translators are known to translate GUI this way and be happy with it.
Generally speaking, Rosetta more or less solves a long standing issue with consistent translation of GUI, showing variants of translation in its web interface, but allows clueless (sorry, if that sounds harsh) people contribute -- and this is unavoidable so far.

When I quickly take a look at the German translation, I see some strings with at least 3 alternative translations in addition to the "official" one. Quite some wasted resources.
German translations there are handled by https://translations.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-de. When I want to join the team, I get "Your subscription to this team is expired. You can't join this team." - whatever that means.
The Rosetta developers have acknowledged the problems raised in several places. IMO, they would do the community a service if they took Rosetta offline (or made it read-only) until it can play along nicely with the various upstreams.
