You should start by subscribing to translators mailing list. The previous wiki page explains how to do it, as well as translating and submitting the finished work.

If you are a Linux user, gettext package contains some useful applications that you can use to accelerate your translation. I think there is an application that fills the translation field automatically using the original message to be translated. Very useful for you Englsih people! It will save you work. I don't remember its name, but you can open a shell command and run "info gettext", or ls /usr/bin/msg* will do the work.

Potential solution if you volunteer for maintaining an en_GB 'translation' of Inkscape is Take a look at : http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/InterfaceTranslation#Interface_Trans...

It indicates where to download inkscape.pot. Once you've got this file, rename it to en_GB.po and modify it with the appropriate tool (poedit or kbabel).

A complete translation of Inkscape interface can consume a lot of time, but I guess, translating from en_US to en_GB might be faster.
