Yes, pootle it is still under development, but inkscape is still under development too and it could be used.
If it isn't much work, please contact with pootle development team and comment your situation for they work to do more easy to us, and another projects, to use pootle to translate directly the .po files and comitting them to svn or cvs.
Thanks, Leandro Regueiro

You can sync your files with SVN with Pootle. :)
Pootle [1] is free software. It has been designed as a tool for upstream projects, so you can configure it to suit your own needs. Translators can choose to use it or not: you can translate offline, online, or both (you can download/upload files using the Pootle interface).
One of its great strengths is the coordination of multiple translator efforts. You have complete control over access, and can assign specific goals and files to different translators. The "suggestion" feature alone is worth using Pootle: it means you can receive suggested translations from your users or new translators without affecting the main file.
I have used it for several projects, including our first OpenOffice.org release recently, so I can recommend it. (Pootle also integrates [2] convertors and error-checks for a range of file formats, including PO, OpenOffice.org, Mozilla, Qt, HTML, XML/Docbook and manpages. The base software is actually XLIFF now, so that gives the server very powerful classification capabilities: you can store a lot more meta-information for individual files and strings.

Please give it a try. If you don't have the capacity, the main Pootle server [3] may be able to host Inkscape, as it has hosted other projects. Just ask on the Pootle list. :)
Pootle is very easy to use: it really lowers the barriers to participation, expecially for new translators. I've found it increases participation, and simplifies the workflow for both translators and admins.

I think the performance problems we had last month are sorted out now. I would expect it to be able to handle more web applications without trouble.
We can install applications that are available through Gentoo without much trouble. It looks like Pootle is not yet in Gentoo, though. It would be nice if someone could first get Pootle into Gentoo, so we could simply emerge it.
We also will need someone to volunteer to be administrator for Pootle, to set it up, customize it, give out accounts, and so forth.

Debian has packaged it, and I know someone on the Pootle list packaged it for another distro recently (FC?). Do we have it packaged for Gentoo yet? If not, it should be easier to create a package based on some of the data for the existing packages.

You'll get a lot of support from the Pootle list, and on #pootle (Freenode).
I'm fairly accustomed to introducing translators to Pootle, setting up their access permissions, goals and files, so I can help with that. Unfortunately, I can't do anything on the sysadmin side. Not enough brain cells left. ;)
