Re: Inkscape 1.4 - Dutch translation
Hi Stephan,
thanks for your questions!
The mailing list is active and not deprecated (as you can see from my replies :) ). The reasoning behind asking for you to put your specific translation questions into the chat is that in the chat, you will most likely get help more quickly, and there won't be dozens of people getting an email for it.
Thanks for letting us know about the inconsistency on the website, it's fixed now. Please do keep telling us when you encounter similar issues!
As for the drastic changes, honestly, I have no concrete suggestion, but I appreciate you giving thought to potential side effects.
I only have some ideas to consider: * Are there many books and frequently used instructions about Inkscape in Dutch that would get outdated all of a sudden? * Maybe a good middle way would be to address the worst things first, and then improve the rest over time? There is a lot of work to do anyway for Dutch.
Not sure that really helps, but I hope you'll enjoy working on translating Inkscape to Dutch.
Kind Regards Maren

Hello Maren,
Thank you for your response including guidelines.
- I have written Kris who'se email address is in the PO file I'd pulled from the repo. Let's see if/when he responds.
- I've joined the chat channel. Is the Inkscape Translators mailing list -- inkscape-translator@lists.inkscape.org depricated?
- I did pull the nl.po from the repository at first and I will be starting anew with the one from https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/Interface_translation. Too bad that the instructions from https://inkscape.org/contribute/translations/ are pointing in different directions. Maybe someone ought to update that page.
As said I have done Dutch translations for a lot of other FOSS projects and I must say that that I've already spotted a few strings that are translated in a - let's say - extraordinary fasion, quite unlike the wording that is being used in other apps or even OS-es. My intention would be to correct these existing Dutch translations according to industry standards. That could potentially put off existing Dutch Inkscape users as their familiar wording will change. What would you say to this?
Kind regards,

Hi Stephan,
welcome!
It looks like the last time someone worked on the Dutch translation files seemed to have been in 2021 [1], and I haven't seen any Dutch contributors working on translations around recently.
You could still try to email Kris, who was the last translator of the po file (mail address in po file).
Otherwise, you can join us in the translators' chat [2] to find people with other native languages who can help out.
To get the most recent po file(s), please follow instructions in our Wiki [3] (do not take the one directly from the repository, it is not up-to-date).
Looking forward to your contributions!
Maren

Hi,
I'd like to contribute to Inkscape 1.4 by completing and improving the Dutch language translation. I have quite some experience with translating all sorts of FOSS
apps and
I am wondering if there are active Dutch translators who can introduce me into the workings overhere and with whom I can cooperate?

Hi Stephan,
I'll add my experience - the Traditional Chinese translations were in limbo the time I started translating, and when the translations are not good enough usually instructors tell people to switch to English anyway, so I started fixing some terminology while translating. They're well-recieved (by my friends at least) and hopefully it would prompt people to make Trad. Chinese tutorials instead of simply switching to English.
Just my 2 cents. Happy translating!
