Hello everyone, following the mail from Maren I am reporting to the translators mailing list to which I believe I never got to subscribed in the past.
My name is Duarte Ramos and I am currently the only (at least to my knowlege) website translator for the Portuguese language. I have been more or less active with the translation depending on the free time I can spare, although I have to admit that I have been "loosing steam" as time goes by. That doesn't mean I have stopped completely, as I plan to keep going until I all is done, and maintain it afterwards as changes come up.
It would definitely be nice to know which pages are "static" or which pages are being worked on or undergoing changes so that no translation effort is lost on out of date content. I have been going through the (very ) long FAQ page for quite some month now, but a lot of it looks like really out of date content. Many are about very old versions of Inkscape I doubt anyone still uses, and workarounds for old operating systems and past bugs that are probably no longer relevant today .

Today someone offered to translate to pt-br, but I don't know how similar your two languages are, so I asked if I should add the language for him. We'll see if you get a colleague or a competitor ;)
You are right, Duarte, the FAQ which is currently on the website is *hopelessly* outdated. BUT: There is a new version sitting on http://staging.inkscape.org/en/brynns-user-faq/, just waiting for the release of 0.91 . It has been updated to match 0.91, that is why it is not yet on the main website.
Many other pages are also currently in flux, so I suggest we first work on those which are not 'moving targets'.
These are: - - the pages in the 'About' section - - the pages in the 'Download' section - - the pages in the new 'Support Us' section - - the news (it would be nice if at least those from end of 2014 and those from 2015 were translated)
The pages, which are currently being changed are: - - 'Learn' section and submenu - - 'Community' section and submenu - - 'Develop' section and submenu - - 'Contribute' section and submenu
I will keep you in the loop and send a message to the list when any of those have 'stabilized'.
Other news:
There is a new translation system planned (cmsrosetta), which is intended to make translating the website a lot easier and less risky. And we are now lucky to have a team of designers working on the looks, but they may also want to make a few contents / structure changes to make the web site more user friendly.

Hello Victor nice to meet you, greetings from Portugal, it's nice to have another Portuguese speaker on board.
The two Portuguese variants are very similar, apart from different accents and a few words we use differently they are very largely interchangeable, probably as similar as British English and American English. That being said I do have a bit of a strong opinion about software translations, I really really dislike my computer related text (software, websites, content, etc.) in Portuguese, however if it is in the Brazilian variant it is really off-putting for me. I mean no disrespect for the Brazilian language, I am sure many of you feel the same way about European Portuguese, and don't expect any decision based solely on my personal view. I perfectly understand if you don't want to add a whole other language to the website, so I leave it up to you, but if I have any saying I would vote for having the two variants.
I don't know if Victor prefers translating from the original English or if it is easier for him to adapt from my Portuguese translations, but if he prefers the second then a lot of work as already been made, also until he can complete all the pages the European versions can stand temporarily in their place.

Hi Duarte.
Yes. I believe that even though our languages have their differences we could easily put the European Portuguese in the sections where Brazilian Portuguese is not yet translated. It's a more or less different language but brazilians are able to understand a whole lot of it.

Duarte, thank you for the explanation! As we now seem to have two volunteers for pt-br (Victor is *not* the one I wrote about), it really makes sense that we add the language. I will see to that being done. Inkscape itself has both, so it doesn't sound strange to me to have both on the web, too.

Some of you already have translated parts of the website, but as the website evolves, there's always something to be done - we need your expertise in your language!
The last months have brought a lot of change to the website
inside and
outside. There are new features, and there is a lot of new
contents (and
some new bugs, too...).
If you want to help, I would like to ask you to primarily focus
on three
things:
1.) The Support Us page and subpages (we are planning a Donation campaign to start soon, and especially need French and Spanish
translations)
2.) The About section (The board plugin can't currently be
translated.
If you want to translate the biographies, copy from German, where I made a html source copy of the board plugin.)
3.) The Download section (so it is prepared for the next release
- when
that comes, you will only need to exchange some numbers and links) Many of the other pages, especially the FAQ and the Community,
Learn and
Contribute pages, are currently being changed and edited a lot,
so those
may need to wait until they are 'stable'.
Django-CMS is, unfortunately, a bit delicate about its revert,
undo and
history functions - and there have been changes to the system some of you may not be aware of.
This is why it's suggested to first read the guide I made for you:

http://staging.inkscape.org, and
play a bit around to try it all out (don't edit pages with names starting with 'Brynn', please, they are drafts for the main website).
Some of you may not have all the permissions necessary - please
send a
message to the translators' mailing list (containing your user
name!) if
you need permissions for staging / for the live website.
It would be good to know who translates to which language, so we can coordinate who is working on which page, to avoid simultaneous
editing
and loss of people's work ;)
Also, if you have any questions, encounter problems or have
suggestions,
just write to the translators' mailing list - it's been far too calm there for a while, and we should change that :)

Excellent, great to know, also glad to have both variants, things are shaping up for a very well translated software comunity, thanks Maren. :)
So it seems Victor will have a partner for translating, which is always helpful, nevertheless let me know if I can help you guys with anything. We should probably coordinate efforts whenever there are new pages to be translated so that we start off on opposite ends. Say if two new pages 'A' and 'B' are ready to be translated, I could start working on A and you on B, so that whenever we finish you can temporarily use European Portuguese version of "page A" on Brazilian website and I could temporarily use your Brazilian Page B on Portuguese one while we both continue with the remaining translations. That way there is less "down time" for both users.

The two Portuguese variants are very similar, apart from different accents and a few words we use differently they are very largely interchangeable, probably as similar as British English and American English. That being said I do have a bit of a strong opinion about software translations, I really really dislike my computer related text (software, websites, content, etc.) in Portuguese, however if it is in the Brazilian variant it is really off-putting for me. You are right, Duarte, the FAQ which is currently on the website is *hopelessly* outdated. BUT: There is a new version sitting on http://staging.inkscape.org/en/brynns-user-faq/, just waiting for the release of 0.91 . It has been updated to match 0.91, that is why it is not yet on the main website.
Many other pages are also currently in flux, so I suggest we first work on those which are not 'moving targets'.
These are:
- the pages in the 'About' section
- the pages in the 'Download' section
- the pages in the new 'Support Us' section
- the news (it would be nice if at least those from end of 2014 and
those from 2015 were translated)
The pages, which are currently being changed are:
- 'Learn' section and submenu
- 'Community' section and submenu
- 'Develop' section and submenu
- 'Contribute' section and submenu
I will keep you in the loop and send a message to the list when any of those have 'stabilized'.
Other news:
There is a new translation system planned (cmsrosetta), which is intended to make translating the website a lot easier and less risky. And we are now lucky to have a team of designers working on the looks, but they may also want to make a few contents / structure changes to make the web site more user friendly.
