Yeah, that sounds right. Here's what I did to create the example that I sent before:

- Wrote text: Drop Shadow - Converted to path - Effect: Dropshadow - Selected the path of the drop shadow (not the group, this is tricky, be careful) - Effect: Blur Edge - Deleted the original drop shadow path
