It sounds like it _might_ be a mimetype problem. Have a look at this website which has a tool to check the mimetype you're sending for your SVG file, and instructions on how to add it to your server if it's missing:

First, thanks for your help. I put the .htaccess file in the same remote directory as the file drawing.svg and it still won't play. I checked it out using http://planetsvg.com/tools/mime.php and my file passed inspection.
Now it works. I just had to correct the link in the inkscape document. Dumb mistake.
the wonder is how did it work before locally?
