Ah, what you want is "Difference" - sorry, I should have said that from the start :)

Also, make sure to select the object you want to remove from the other last. i.e. if you are making a hole in the larger object make sure to select the large path first, then the "hole" path, and then select Path>Difference.

Hello Perry,

 

You'll want to use path operations - from what I can tell from your image, you'll want to first subtract the black box from the big blue one, then union all the blue boxes. Check out this page for more details on how to do that:

 

(You might have to select the rect objects and then use the "Paths>object to path" menu item before any path operations will work though)
