A recap... Group objects, clip group, and "enter" the group (double click) to move objects around inside the clipped area. Then you can leave the group when you're done.
Aaah. You get the love! :) 'tis a wonderful thing to behold (*). Thanks for the info!
Woohoo! Glad it's sufficient... I was weary of our method at first, but now I can't stand other implementations. ;)
I hope that was helpful more than it was confusing. :)
Spot on! Is there anything about this in the Help? I looked, but might have missed it.
Well, I have a tutorial that I started a while back that is for clippaths, masks, and patterns. The problem is I have had a complete lack of free time to work on it and I want it to be comprehensive, so it probably won't make it into 0.45 if that gets released soon (after all translators need time to do their part too).
Documentation-wise in general... if you have a question that isn't answered by our tutorials, you can always check to see if there is an explanation of X feature or tool at: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php
Information about masks appears to be at: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ch11s02.html
My guess is that the masking behavior will make more sense once you read that, again I hope this was what you needed to know. :)

(*) I did just install the latest autopackage, so not sure if that would have worked in standard 0.44. Still, I am happy again!
Yes, it would have worked the same in 0.44... but the latest and greatest inkscape is still the way to go in my opinion.
