Not at all. Just zoom out enough for both objects to be visible. It won't scroll the view then.
But if I zoom out, the node's handles are no longer discernible.
Moreover, if the two objects are almost the same and only differ by a few nodes, then on the contrary, it's much easier to zoom in and use Tab to switch view between these two objects. Then the objects will precisely replace each other in your view, each becoming centered, and you'll see at once exactly which nodes are misplaced and by how much. Pretty convenient.
That is not my experience. When I hit Tab with nodes selected, the selection moves to the next node on the path. When I hit Tab with the object selected, selection moves to the next object and the screen is centered on the object, usualy moving the part of the object that I am interested off-screen. Even when the centering does not move the display away from what I am looking at, the difference is no more visible due to the selection changing that when there are no objects selected. What I want is to see the node handles, and change selection to the other object and see the node handles on the other object.
I can achieve this now by opening the document twice and using Alt-Tab two switch between one version with the first object selected, and the other instance with the second object selected. I have to be careful to use identical zoom and scroll operations on each window to get them exactly lined up.
Not to mention its being a "shame".
I didn't mean "shame" in the strong sense that it's something to be ambarrassed or ashamed about, but in the causal sense of "it's inconvenient, and I would prefer it to be different".
