You may be able to render such a pattern using L-systems (Effects-
>Render->L-System)

I'm not an expert on L-systems but I have seen similar things done
with them...if you can't accomplish what you need using Inkscape's
built-in L-system parser you might be able to find another that can
produces SVG output.

You won't have the line "connected" as you discuss, but you can of
course draw two lines so that one touches the middle of the other.
