I'd like to set print parameters. When I select print the page goes straight to the printer. In this case it is an A4 page in landscape mode, it gets printed in portrait mode.
I've run into this issue myself.
Ideally, when you invoked the Print command in Inkscape, it'd include a link to specify printer options such as to print in landscape mode. At one point long ago I recall doing exactly this in Inkscape, and it worked. I think it's possible I had configured inkscape to use the gnome print dialog.
It is in theory possible to pass these options via the printer command line in the print dialog, however as you've probably noticed, it's far from intuitive. I don't have a good reference to point you to, but maybe one of the other users can provide a decent url with the options to specify landscape printing.
A possible workaround (which I've never tested), might be to set your global default printer options through the GNOME or KDE preferences system, then print through inkscape, and then restore the settings.
Printing is admittedly one of the weakest areas in Inkscape, and next to PDF support, is the _most_ in need of help. If there's anyone out there with a hankering to learn and play around with printer stuff, you could quickly get on everyone's "most loved" list. ;-)
