I am experiencing one small problem: I can only move object vertically with the mouse cursor but cannot move it horizontally. I can move it both ways using the arrow keys on the keyboard without problem, though.
What could be the problem? FYI, I have builts inkscape from source through Gentoo's portage.
That is really strange... I too have built inkscape on Gentoo, but have never run into a problem like that.
However, njh reported an issue that sounds similar, that he fixed by fiddling with his mouse driver (he had an MS Intellimouse iirc). I believe he runs Debian.
Thanks, Bryce. Would you please tell me where can I find out about what has njh done to fix the problem? I have a normal scroll mouse and it works fine in other programs. I have switched from xfree86 to x.org lately. Would that be the source of problem? My xorg.conf looks like this regarding the mouse setting:

In reviewing the discussion logs it is clear that the problem is different. But here's the relevant bits:
[17:03:34] <njh_home> I bought a microsoft intellimouse on the weekend - it seems that they have all the usb ports mixed up. Moving the mouse left and right moves the cursor vertically, moving the mouse vertically scrolls vertically, clicking the buttons moves the cursor 1 << button_number right. However, there is an intellimouse protocol for X, so I will try that... I had foolishly thought that when people standardised on usb they would also fix the mess that is mice protocols.
(IIRC, he tried the intellimouse protocol and it fixed the issue)
