On the controls bar (above canvas) for the selector tool, on the right, there's a toggle button with gradient. You have this is behavior when this button is off (not pressed).
What's more interesting is why you have it off. It's on by default. Do you remember changing it? We've seen several such reports recently, so this starts to puzzle me.
Thanks for the tip. I must have turned it off in a previous session while exploring inkscape's features. Or perhaps it crashed after I turned it off.
