It works like this: any object (bitmap, shape, group) should be masked in simple shape. If it would depend on mask-shape fill (white=transparent), it is the best.
We already have SVG masking support. It's probably buggy because it's not used, and it's not used because there's no UI for it. It's in our plans.
And what about text frames with aligning?
This is also being worked on. We're likely to have floating text in arbitrary shapes some time into the future.
ps. I can't get a cvs access to build dev inkscape with kerning features.
Doesn't anon CVS work these days? Or you have some errors when building? In the first case, wait a day, then take the snapshot on the site (I believe it's made daily).
