Oh nevermind. I found it.
With Inkscape open, I switched the mode to straight line mode, drew a quick couple of paths, saved, and then closed all instances of Inkscape. Then when I checked the prefs file, it does show "freehand-mode="0". Then I opened Inkscape and checked, it's now showing straight line mode.
However, several times (since that first report) I've started to draw with the Pen tool, expecting it to still be in straight line mode, and it's back to bspline mode. And I think, "I thought I changed that." Then I switch it again, and keep working. But just now, I started to draw again, and darned if it wasn't in bspline mode Again! And I don't even know what bspline mode is or does, so I didn't set it that way on purpose, for any reason.
So I'll have to pay some closer attention to when I find it set back to bspline mode, and try to remember what I've done. You know it's possible that when I've changed it, saved and closed a file, that I still had other Inkscape instances open, and it never got written to prefs. Could that be it? I almost always have at least 2 instances open at the same time.
I'll post again, if or when I have some new info.
Thanks again, brynn
PS - No problem, Maren. I wasn't considering this something that needs to be fixed before the release. It would be nice if it could be, but first, we need to figure out what's causing it.
The problem you mentioned is with the Text tool? Yeah, it's showing 200 px for me too (52.92 mm). It doesn't seem like that would be hard to fix. Not that I know anything about programming. But it seems like it would just be one number somewhere, that needs to be changed.
While we might be answering that question a few times, at least it's something that the user can easily control. Once we point it out to them, they could handle it on their own. At least it's not something hidden. Some people might even figure it out on their own.

Hi, as far as I can tell, the mode of the Pen tool (regular versus Spiro) should be remembered automatically. At least on my machine that is what happens, Windows 10, Inkscape 0.92pre5 r15287 (32 bit exe build).
- first thing to check is whether the prefs file is getting updated properly. It is at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml and it should get updated every single time you close Inkscape. So check the time stamp to make sure it is up-to-date
- second thing to check is the setting freehand-mode="0" inside the prefs file. freehand-mode="0" means regular Bezier pen freehand-mode="1" means spiro pen
This setting should reflect the last usage of the pen (after you have closed Inkscape, and after the prefs file has been refreshed)
