Good question. Yes, if you want to move the two objects together, grouping is a good approach and is fully supported in SVG.
But I guess the specific linking model I'm thinking about is where you have two shapes connected by a line (i.e., with one line endpoint connected to one shape, the other end to the other), and you wish to move one shape but not the other, and have the line remain connected to both shapes.
I was just concerned with object snapping so I could precisely attach graphic objects to other graphic objects. I didn't think about maintaining the link.
Ah, okay, you're right, that's a bit different. One thing you may want to try is the Align dialog box. It permits you to line up objects in a variety of ways, one of which may enable what you want to do. I think there's also some keyboard shortcuts for them.
