However I am still having trouble installing Inkscape to suse 9.1 Unable to install GTK+2 because it needs GTK+2 devel and I can't even find GTK+2 devel.
The gtk2-devel packages should be on one of the install CDs. Otherwise, try rpmfind.net

Are there easier versions of sue or other distributions of linux to install inkscape on.
I think the problems you're experiencing are due primarily to inexperience rather than a `bad' distribution.
