Otherwise I built a generic package from the latest source on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS which I think should work on 10.10

Hey All,
After 6 months of development and delays out of our control, Inkscape 0.48.1 is out. This bug-fix release of the SVG-based vector graphics editor contains over 80 bug fixes as well as improves stability and performance on all platforms. Please visit inkscape.org for more information and to get your copy.
As an FYI for Ubuntu maverick 10.10 users:
Ubuntu only has 0.48.1 for the natty (alpha pre-release): https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape/0.48.1-0ubuntu1 and no idea how long it will take for them to backport to maverick.
For maverick (10.10) I used the info provided at: http://www.mohamedmalik.com/?p=609 However, ppa:ferramroberto/maverick pulls in a _lot_ of non-inkscape packages. https://launchpad.net/~ferramroberto/+archive/maverick
So I downloaded the deb's from the ppa directly: http://ppa.launchpad.net/ferramroberto/maverick/ubuntu/pool/main/i/inkscape/ and installed.
Working fine (so far) on both 32bit and 64bit Ubuntu 10.10 maverick systems. 'About|Inkscape' reports as 'Inkscape 0.48.1 r9760' which is the same as the version reported on natty 11.04.
Thanks Ferramosca Roberto for the builds! https://launchpad.net/~ferramroberto
Added note: Looks like there are lucid packages also, but I've not tested them yet: https://launchpad.net/~ferramroberto/+archive/linuxfreedomlucid http://ppa.launchpad.net/ferramroberto/linuxfreedomlucid/ubuntu/pool/main/i/inkscape/
