Hi Alex,
I don't have "Smoothness" setting in my File/Inkscape Preferences/Tools/Pencil! I can't see any other preferences dialog. I'm using Inkscape-0.41 on Fedora Core 3.
I revise my earlier comment about Sodipodi's pencil tool more precisely here: _No_ other software, including Illustrator, Corel, Feehand, Inkscape, etc., has the superb smoothness of Sodipodi's Pencil tool. I always work with Sodipodi when I want to draw freehand - no other tools work as best and as smooth. In addition, I have used sodipodi's pencil tool on a number of machines with different machines (I started with with Red Hat 7.3 on Pentium 3 500MHz probably, IIRC) and, IMNSHO, the pencil's smoothness has nothing to do with the machine's speed - it works superb on my machine. No other vector tools yield the quality that I get outta of Sodipodi. So, you guys should improve your pencil tool. Since, it is opensource, I think it should be relatively easy.
Best regards
Asif
p.s. I would appreciate if you answer my earlier query about ./configure failure as well. That's still pending.

in "Preferences - Instruments - Pencil" ;-)
Well, that's good to know.
But -- assuming that the required smoothness varies with machine speed (which I still need to verify) -- it should really be automatically adjusted (even if the base smoothness value is still user specified).
