Is useful to learn Inkscape if you want to use vector graphics. Gimp has very limited capabilities in this area. Vector and raster graphics are entirely different worlds and often one person need both type of applications, be it Gimp and Inkscape or Photoshop and Illustrator.
Are you asking about the benefits of using vector graphics?
