That makes two of us :) I am also a researcher, did considerable work using pencil, crayons & water colors and came to Inkscape after using SodiPodi whose pencil I liked a LOT! I would suggest that you should start using Calligraphic Pen to get a taste of the sketches that you can do in Inkscape - particularly, figures such as comics. You would also find some latest tools HIGHLY effective - particularly, the one that lets you "nudge/push" your curves in shape very slowly and some others as well.
I have yet to learn Inkscape fully because of shortage of time but I really like it! Please visit the gallery/showcases on inkscape.org to check out the kind of stuff you can do with this software.

Hi!
My name is Fahad Fateh and I am from Pakistan. By profession I am a researcher and I love colors. I used to paint but few years back I left painting. And now I want to resume.
Right now I am using Adobe Flash because I knew that software but I want to move to Inkscape for three reasons. Its open source, its for graphics and because pen support is native.
And before I started, I wanted to discuss what is an appropriate way to start. Start painting using Inkscape.
Should I copy others, should I draw small things first or should I sketch first using pencil and paper and move to Inkscape later?
My earlier experience includes art work back in school and two oil paintings.
Any books for recomendation?
Thanks,
Fahad
