Another option is to look at the cairo tools, which have an svg->pdf capability and can definitely be used from the commandline. I don't know of anyone that's gone this route so I don't know if it'd actually work. If it does work, though, this would be extremely good info to have.
It's for a server which I don't have root on (paid hosting, at Bluehost). They did say I could install whatever I wanted as long as it didn't interfere with other sites, so nothing too procesor intensive, etc. It also means that whatever I install comes from my disk quota.
I haven't gotten it actually installed on my server yet, but what I've come up with so far is 1) A Java 1.4.2 install, 2) Batik, 3) PDF join. I've been able to successfully script the conversion of a couple of SVGs into one multipage PDF using those three tools.
I recall some discussion about how Batik has trouble with more complex SVGs or SVGs with transparency...I'll have to see if I can avoid using those types.
I'm trying to make a site where people can create a custom children's book. They select different options about the kids likes and dislikes, put in the kids name and some other information, and a PDF gets generated. The PDF could then be printed via lulu.com or something.
I hope to use SVG because I'd like to do the graphics in Inkscape, and it seems it would be relatively easy to add and remove elements from a drawing programaticaly since it's all just XML.
