Absolutely, with one caveat. Oss documentation many times is eccentric to the writers' (volunteer) experiences and can cause misunderstanding or confusion (Inkscape I found to be well written, I'm talking of others). I think that propriety software avoids documentation for this reason as well as the obvious financial reasons.
