The spam on this list is getting ridiculous, like every second or third message. If the list is not already closed to non-subscribers I really hope the admins will close it. (If this keeps up my spam checker will start blocking valid list digest mails because the list digest contains too much spam.)

You see this effect a lot, that the transparency is like a gradient.
For instance, look at the mirrored text in the following image:

Of course, this image can easily be done in Inkscape, given that the font is available.
But imagine that the mirrored word 'gnome' is available as bitmap only. That can't be done easily, because you cannot change the transparency as a gradient. At least as far a I could figure out. Or maybe I am missing something.
You might be able to cheat and get something close by doing it backwards by lowering the overal transparency of the bitmap and then putting a rectangle containing a gradient on top of it.
