I've also found on 0.48 that some fonts which don't appear in the drop-down list on the toolbar are still available via the "Text > Text and Font..." dialog.

Try copying the ttf file for the font into the hidden .fonts folder in your home folder. This usually works well for me on Ubuntu based distros. In fact it works so well that I often just clone Google's entire open fonts git repo right into it. :)
