Hi,
to accomplish that effect, you would be needing a stroke style with a non-square or non-circular (i.e. rectangular or elliptical) brush shape.
This is indeed a pretty common tool in f.e. Corel Draw... but now that you mention, I can't seem to find this in Inkscape... (I'm using 4.6 here though, haven't tried 4.7 yet)

Is there any hope that Inkscape will ever allow to apply calligraphic pens to paths the way Illustrator does?
You can in 0.47 - copy any stroke shape and use "from clipboard" for "shape" in pen or pencil, then copy it and path > "paste path effect" on any preexisting path if necessary.
That's not the effect I'm after. I mean the one where the shape of the path simulates a stroke of a calligraphic pen. Some of us have shaky hands and no tablet, so the calligraphic pen tool doesn't quite give us what we want.
Or am I not doing it right?
