I have a small question about the gradient tool in Inkscape: can transpency gradients be applied to bitmaps imported into Inkscape? It seems that I cannot apply gradient transparency to bitmaps. Alpha transparensy woks fine, blur too. I there such a feature in Inkcape?
No, you can't do it directly. But you can apply a gradient mask (another object with a gradient) to the image to get the effect you need. -- bulia byak
Thanks Bulia, I did it and it looks perfect!
Actually the 0.45 release is quite stable on Windows XP. The designer created a huge (A3) illustration full of gradients, blurred objects (even blurred bitmaps), with tons of gradients. The overall SVG has aproximately 56Mb and Inkscape is still quite stable while working with it (but very slow though, so about 50% of the job was made in outline mode, which is damn fast!).
The PNG took about 2.5 hours to generate, but in the end it was absolutely perfect, I'm very happy about it (it is beeing prepared for offset printing now, converted to cmyk, combined with text and vector elements in Indesign). For our design studio it is the first commercial design for the offset printing that we did at more than half in Inkscape, and it's been a great experience :)
A big THANK to all the developers and translators, you did a huge and great job!
